Bio/Description

Speech production is perhaps the most complicated motor activity humans produce, requiring control of a complex neuromuscular system to produce movements that achieve millimeter-level precision and that are coordinated with millisecond-level accuracy. Moreover, these movements are not produced just to reach some target position in space at a particular time as in other motor behaviors; rather, multiple movements must be controlled together to convey a linguistic, communicative message. My research focuses on the neurocomputational mechanisms that underly this complex behavior, including the control of speech movements in healthy speakers, motor learning and error correction, and the breakdown of these processes in neurological disease. Ultimately, we hope that a mechanistic understanding of the speech motor system will lead to improved treatments for individuals with motor speech disorders.
